PE & Sports Grant

Since 2013, the Government have spent millions of pounds on improving physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools via the PE and Sports Premium.

The PE and Sports Premium is an allocation of money given to schools to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision, as well as giving all children the opportunity to experience a range of activities outside of the classroom. Schools are free to determine how best to use this funding to improve the quality and range of PE and sport provision, including increasing participation in PE and sport so that pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performance levels they are capable of.

The Sports Premium Grant is money provided directly to primary schools to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for children. The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools, which have the freedom to choose how they do this. Every school is given a lump sum and additional payments based on pupil numbers.

Funding has helped to provide opportunities for our own pupils and attend sporting events run in the locality. Doing this work the school has achieved the School Games Gold award for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Schools are required to detail how they have spent their grant funding each year and the impact that this funding has had. Please see the following document regarding how the grant was spent at St Wilfrid's in recent year

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity (PESSPA) they offer.

At St Wilfrid's we use the money to focus on four key areas:

  • Assured training and coaching for staff to raise their confidence and competence in teaching PE and sport
  • Increased participation and enjoyment of PE for all pupils during lessons and extracurricular opportunities
  • Development of our talented sportsmen/women to support them in reaching their potential and further progressing within their fields
  • Procurement of high-quality, age-appropriate equipment to meet the needs of our pupils in a growing school
